Bookend Review 2014

So it turns out that student teaching kept me plenty busy, but not so busy that I couldn’t read around 25 books while doing it. I applied for jobs…didn’t get jobs. So my fall was spent subbing, which means lots of reading time, especially in high school classes where I don’t have to repeat myself tons of times. As such I was able to read a total of 101 books in 2014, I probably could have squeezed another in there but I decided to just relax, plus I got sick and have issues concentrating on things when I’m sick.

My goal for next year is going to be 150 books. I plan to read more manga, which some consider books and others don’t. As long as it’s over 100 pages, I count it. Onto the books and reviews!

Start: 1/1/14

End: 12/18/14

Another busy year, lots of unexpected events, but I still met my reading goal of reading 75 books! And with the gift cards I received for Christmas I have already bought 6 books on my Kindle Fire to start 2014 off with. I’m going to save my B&N gift cards for books that will be published in 2014.

I’m going to be student teaching the first part of 2014 so… my reading goal for 2014 is just going to be 50 books, as I don’t know how many I’ll get around to the first half of the year and then I have no idea what will happen the second half of the year.

I'm halfway through my reading goal for the year so it's time to report my progress! Reviews and ratings will wait until my Book End Review at the end of the year.

I had kinda burned myself out the last month or so, so I hadn't done much reading. Then this week I decided I needed to quit putting off a couple of books I had gotten from the library before my mom passed away... and so this week I have read 4 books. I'm having a lot of issues reading The Guardians by William Joyce, the books that Rise of the Guardians was based on. It's below my reading level and I think that's why I'm finding it so hard to read, I've been reading it for 2 months and am only 20% through it. I just need to force myself to sit down and read it.

Anyway... here are the 39 books I have read so far this year:

Start: 1/1/13

2. The Christmas Wedding - James Patterson
3. The Christmas Dog - Melody Carlson

7. A Mercy - Toni Morrison
8. Lost Souls - Poppy Z. Brite
9. Water, Stone, Heart - Will North
10. Moonlight Masquerade - Jude Deveraux
11. Loveless Vol. 10 - Yun Kouga
12. The Tutor Rose - Margret Campbell Barnes
13. Commencement - J. Courtney Sullivan
14. Benny & Shrimp - Katarina Mazetti
15. Warm Bodies - Issac Marion
16. Don't Let Me Go - J.H. Trumble
17. Personal Effects - E.M. Kokie
18. Riding with Heaven - L.C. Chase
19. Bound by Love - T.A. Chase
20. Finding Love - T.A. Chase

Books of 2012

A lot of people don’t understand challenging yourself to read, mostly my students. Of course, these are students who have never been encouraged to read and don’t understand the magic that can happen when you find a book that just gets the gears in your head turning.

Well, I consider myself to be a competitive person so giving myself this challenge each year gives me something to work toward. And, being an English major, I love to read. That being said, my challenge for this year was to read 75 books, 15 less than last year as I anticipated being really busy with school. I’ve learned when I get behind on my reading goal (Goodreads starts yelling at me) that reading a gay fiction on my Fire is a great way to catch up.

Books with a * at the end mean they were read for school/work. If I read 75% or more of these then they counted.

[livejournal.com profile] m_stiefvater is having a end of the year book giveaway. The requirements for an entry include choosing a favorite post from her blog and talking about it in your own.

Normally I think this would be a hard choice but honestly it wasn't. There was one entry by [livejournal.com profile] m_stiefvater that has stood out in my mind since she posted it back at the beginning of December. I think it stood out because so many budding writers have the questions she addresses in the entry.

So which entry is it? A Proper Education, which addresses: Did you go to school for Creative Writing? Do you have to have a degree in writing to get published? Have you taken classes in writing? & Will you be my mentor?

There are a lot of rumors that surround the world of publishing, perhaps one of the biggest being that you have to go to school for Creative Writing to be published. This, as Stiefvater points out in her entry, is simply not true. Some do, but many don't. I'm glad she took the time to address these questions and did it in such a detailed way, it's extremely helpful for an aspiring writer.

I think my favorite part was at the end when she posted the picture of early writing and talked about how that was her education. People always say the way to master something is "practice, practice, practice!" and there is an extreme level of truth to that bit of advice. Very few have the Midas touch where every word they write is gold and for the majority the only way we will ever achieve that level of mastery is to practice. I know I have a drawer full of folders in my file cabinet that contains original and fandom writings that I will one day look back at and maybe pick up an old idea or say, "What the heck was I thinking?!"

All in all, I found the information in that post extremely helpful and I appreciate it when successful authors take the time to touch base with their fans.

Last year I gave myself seven months to complete a reading goal of 100 books by 12/31/10. I got close (74) but didn’t quite hit the mark. Well, this year I gave myself the same goal except that I started in January.

Start date: 1/1/11
Date of completion: 12/31/11

# of Books read: 100

I must admit that I feel extremely accomplished to have read this many books. Looking back to how busy I was at the end of my semester… I’m not sure how I made it. Oh, that’s right… if I had to read 75% or more of a book for a class (and it was listed on Goodreads) I counted it toward my reading goal. The books that were assigned for class have a * by the title.

Now… because I’m a bookie and I cannot keep myself from adding new books to read to my “to-read” list I currently have 193 books that I want to read. Probably only 5 of those haven’t been published yet. I have some serious reading to do… and a new Kindle Fire to help me do it! :D

Below is the list of books I read this year and below that is a cut. The cut will take you to my rating and review of each book. Enjoy!

1. Favourite childhood book? - Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. I was obsessed with horses when I was little so a book about a horse was right up my alley. My dad would read me a chapter a night. I still have that copy of the book with his old business card marking where we stopped.

2. What are you reading right now? - Chasing Seth by J.R. Loveless, The King by Linda Rios-Brook, Understanding English Grammar by Martha J. Kolln, One World of Literature by Shirley Lim, Teaching in the Secondary School by Tom V. Savage & Grammar to Go: How It Works and How To Use It by Barbara Goldstein.

3. What books do you have on request at the library? - Something on Reading Across the Curriculum for my research paper and The King - Linda Rios-Brook.

4. Bad book habit? - Buying them when I don't have the money.

5. What do you currently have checked out at the library? - 3 books but I haven't started reading them... can't remember what the 3 are. They're on my "to-read" list on Goodreads.com.

6. Do you have an e-reader? - Mhm, I have a Kindle that my parents got me for my college graduation present.

7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once? - Usually one at a time. But I'll make an exception if I have them in a different media. Like, I will read 3 books at a time if one is on audio, another is in book form and the third is on my Kindle for PC.

8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog? - No, I just do a Book End Review over what I've read during the year at the end of the year.

9. Least favourite book you read this year (so far?) - One's that I've given 1 star to... Heart of Darkness by Conrad, My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult, Vanished Smile: The Mysterious Theft of Mona Lisa by R.A. Scotti, Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson, Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer (this one got 0 stars).

10. Favourite book you've read this year? - Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. I haven't seen the movie yet but the book was amazing!

Book End Review

This year after graduating from college in May I gave myself a goal. Read 100 books by 12/31/10.

Well… seeing as I basically gave myself seven months to accomplish this goal… I didn’t. But! I think I did pretty well. As of tonight I have read 56 books in the past seven months. Not to bad if you ask me. It feels so good to read again!

I still have 100+ books on my Goodreads to read list. When I get my list down to 100 I’m going to add more but not until then!

Upon reviewing my Goodread’s “Read” list, I actually read more than 56 books this year. I was in a Lit of the American Teen class so there was quite a bit of reading done there. Sadly, my own personal reading was more interesting than the one’s assigned for class. Anything with a * beside it was read for class.

So my yearly total is 74! I almost made it!

Below I have included the list of books I have read. To make myself feel extra accomplished below the initial list I’m going to include my reviews of each book. To be nice the reviews are under a cut. I thought about including the book covers as well… but seeing as this was 11 pgs on M.S. Word as is… I decided not to.

And I hope that next year, even though I will be taking classes to complete my teaching degree, I will meet my 100 book goal.

List of Banned Books from 2009-2010

Some highlights:

Anderson, Laurie Halse
Twisted
Viking
Withdrawn from classroom use and the approved curriculum at the Montgomery County, Ky. High School (2009), but available at the high school library and student book club. Some parents have complained about five novels that contain foul language and cover topics — including sex, child abuse, suicide, and drug abuse — deemed unsuited for discussion in coed high school classes. They also contend that the books don’t provide the intellectual challenge and rigor that students need in college preparatory classes. The titles appeared on suggested book lists compiled by the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association, for twelve- to eighteen-year-olds who are “reluctant readers.” The superintendent removed the book because it wasn’t on the pre-approved curriculum list and couldn’t be added by teachers in the middle of a school year without permission. Merriam-Webster Editorial Staff
Merriam-Webster Collegiate
Dictionary
Merriam-Webster
Pulled from the Menifee, Calif. Union School District (2010) because a parent complained when a child came across the term “oral sex.” Offi cials said the district is forming a committee to consider a permanent classroom ban of the dictionary. Source: Mar. 2010, p. 55.

Meyer, Stephenie H.
Twilight series
Little
Banned in Australia (2009) for primary school students because the series is too racy. Librarians have stripped the books from shelves in some junior schools because they believe the content is too sexual and goes against religious beliefs. They even have asked parents not to let kids bring their own copies of Stephenie Meyer’s smash hit novels — which explore the stormy love affair between a teenage girl and a vampire — to school. Source: Nov. 2009, pp. 207–8.

([livejournal.com profile] avari_maethor's note: Have these people read the Twilight series? SM can't even say the word sex until the 4th book.)

Snyder, Zilpha Keatley
The Egypt Game
Dell; Macmillan
Challenged as part of a reading list in a fourth-grade class at Southern Hills Elementary School in Wichita Falls, Tex. (2009) because the book includes scenes depicting Egyptian worship rituals. The Newbery Award-winning book has been an optional part of the school district’s curriculum for years. “I’m not going to
stop until it’s banned from the school district. I will not quiet down. I will not back down. I don’t believe any student should be subjected to anything that has to do with evil gods or black magic,” said the student’s father. Source: Jan. 2010, p. 17.

Day 30 - What book are you reading right now?

Well... this morning I finished The Chronicles of Vladamir Tod: Twelfth Grade Kills. This afternoon I started Voices of Dragons.

Twelfth Grade Kills was awesome, seemed a little rushed at the end but I was completely happy with the ending. I demand a sequel series please.

Day 29 - Saddest character death OR best/most satisfying character death (or both!)

At first I was going to say Sirius (HP) but then I thought Snape (HP) but then there's Hegwig... and the Wesley twin... Fred I think it was.

As such I'm going with everyone who died in HP7. Also Dumbledore.

[livejournal.com profile] starry_nights88 would like me to also add Cedric. I'm just not his biggest fan. And it's not because of R. Pattz

Day 28 - First favorite book or series obsession

Best Friends
Steve Kellogg

I can't even begin to count how many times I checked this book out from my teacher's classroom when I was in first grade. My nana, my parents, everyone read this book to me until I learned to read it myself. I loved this book.

Day 27 - If a book contains ______, you will always read it (and a book or books that contain it)!

Words.

Sorry, I felt like being a smart ass for some reason...

Honestly though, I don't have a certain genre that I prefer over others. I won't read every book that is gay fiction or has magic in it. It has to grab my attention first.

But I can honestly say, I will read anything that has words in it.

Day 26 - OMG WTF? OR most irritating/awful/annoying book ending

Okay well... there has really only been one book that I have thrown across the room once I finished it. That book was Hawke's Harbor by S.E. Hinton. Not because the book was awful, or that the ending sucked... I just DID NOT want it to end there. It was a really gorgeous ending with lovely imagery but... just didn't want that to be the end.

2. The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear - Walter Moers, John Brownjohn (Translator)
