Chapter 4
Ryun woke a couple of hours later. He yawned and stretched as he came out of his room, he felt much better than he had before. The apartment was very quiet... a bit too quiet for his liking.
Still staring out the window Faith made no noise. Vaughn, who couldn’t figure out what she was staring at, proceeded to see if he could find more information on her kind of angel. Upon Ryun entering the living room Faith acknowledged him, looked back out the window, then skipped over to him as if no longer worried about whatever she had been looking at.
Ryun patted her on the head but otherwise ignored her as he went to the kitchen.
"Vaughn, have you had supper?" He questioned.
"No, I am not all that hungry. I had to clean up a toilet that was clogged with barf, and clean up where a couple had had sex and ejaculated all over the stairwell walls…" Vaughn answered with that same smile he always had.
“To much information," Ryun muttered. He turned on the radio as he got the pots and pans out that he needed to cook. Music filled the apartment just as it always did when he cooked. Soon the delicious smells of grilled chicken and pasta filled the apartment.
"Of course I might have some food now that I smell it." Vaughn laughed. He looked over at Faith who had been bouncing around the apartment dancing to the music but now was back at the window. "I wish she could use words. I really want to know what is so interesting."
Ryun added another piece of chicken to the small grill that was on the counter before turning to lean on the counter and look at Faith.
'Do you think in words little one?' He thought sending the question to her through his mental powers.
Faith didn’t think in words so much as emotion and images. Her mind was filled with them, yet she seemed to process his question. Images of outside the window poured into Ryun's mind in response. Across the street there was an old warehouse. Seemingly uneventful the images began to focus on a window in the upper leftmost area of the building. Standing in the window was a silhouette.
"There's something... or rather someone in the warehouse," Ryun told Vaughn.
"Really? I didn’t see anyone." Vaughn paused. "But then I am not that observant."
"She sees it and that's enough for me. After supper I will go check it out."
Vaughn thought this odd since he hadn’t seen anyone. But more than that had he seen someone he figured Ryun would do as he might have done, brush it off as just a human that was there. He couldn’t help but ask. "Wait; did she say what the person was doing?"
"Looked like they were watching."
"Looked like?" Vaughn thought about it. "OH you can see what she sees!" He realized in his special airheaded moment.
"Telekinesis Vaughn," Ryun replied.
"Boy I feel stupid. But who would watch us?"
“I have no idea but I'm going to find out."
Vaughn just nodded. Faith looked at the two of them. After a moment her eyes widened. "COOOO!"
Ryun looked down at her with a raised eyebrow.
"What?" He questioned.
She pointed to the chicken on the grill, which was now smoking.
Ryun turned quickly and used a fork to pull the pieces off the grill and onto a plate while he unplugged the grill with his other hand. He sighed as he waved the smoke away before it set off the fire alarm.
"And that is why you shouldn't distract the cook."
Vaughn coughed at the smell, his cough covering a laugh. When Ryun finished cooking the pasta and made the plates presentable they sat down to eat. Faith “coo”ed happily as she ate and though he wouldn’t admit it, Ryun felt his heart softening toward her ever so slightly. After everyone had finished Vaughn claimed the duty of doing the dishes. He got a stool and showed Faith how to dry the plates and utensils he handed her after they were cleaned.
With the kitchen was cleaned up after their meal Ryun went to his room and changed for the third time that day. He found his cloak at the back of his closet and figured if anything happened he would be able to move easier in it than a jacket so he pulled it on.
"I will be back soon," he said walking toward the door.
"Alright," Vaughn said. Faith seemed to object and ran over jumping in front of the door, as though to prevent his departure. Vaughn pulled her to him and said, "He will be fine. Let’s wait here."
Ryun nodded and walked out the door.
Faith watched as he left then broke free from Vaughn. She stood for a moment looking at the door then she sighed and walked back to Ryun's room. Watching her Vaughn chuckled to himself and went to his own room. "Eh, well, if I stopped her she would only sneak in while he is asleep."
Ryun made his way over to the warehouse across from their apartment building. He could see a bit of light coming from the window he had seen through the images in Faith's mind. Within minutes he was standing in the room ready for a fight should there be need for one. He blinked when all he found was a startled old man in rags.
"What are you doing here?" Ryun questioned in a stern voice.
"I live here," the man muttered slightly afraid. "Why are you here?"
"I live over there," Ryun said pointing to their lit apartment across the way. "You have been watching us."
"Oh, I watch everyone," the old man explained. "Wait... you live in the apartment with that cute little girl? I have been watching that one more. Something about her is so interesting."
"What is it that is so interesting?" Ryun questioned.
"I don’t know; I just feel like life isn’t so horrible when I see her. I even thought about applying for a job." He looked at Ryun for a moment. "Is she your daughter...or something?"
"Or something," Ryun replied. "If I were you old man, I would find another place to sleep. If I catch you watching us again our next meeting will not be so pleasant." Ryun added a bit of mind pressure to convince the man, his eyes lighting just enough to show he was not kidding.
"O-okay... I w-was moving out anyway...I-I applied for a… a job at Wal-Mart...he he..." He stammered as he gathered his things and ran out as fast as he could.
Ryun waited until he was sure the man had left and then he went back home. He wouldn't lie, he had been hoping for something more exciting. Oh well, maybe another time.
Ryun's room was not as interesting when Ryun was not in it; however, Faith found plenty of fun things to look at. The pendant from before on his desk caught her interest. Round, with what appeared to be a pentagram on it, its red stone sparkled under the onyx star. She seemed dazed by it.
Ryun entered the apartment and took his cape off.
"It was only a homeless man," he told Vaughn.
"Yeah, I saw him take off. Oh, you should know Faith is in your room," Vaughn stated in his usual enigmatic way.
Vaughn heard Ryun growl and watched as he disappeared down the hall. Ryun pushed his door open from where it was only halfway open. His eyes widened when he saw Faith holding his pendant. His pendant, the one had been a personal gift from Lucifer.
"Drop that!" He exclaimed. Staring at him Faith held it closer to her as if refusing him. Vaughn appeared in the doorway. "Don't make me tell you again kid," Ryun growled, his eyes flashing.
"Oh let her hang onto it Ryun," Vaughn said. "It’s not like she can break it and if I remember correctly you couldn’t use it anyway."
Tearing up slightly, Faith started to move to put it back on his desk. Laying it on the edge of his desk she took her hand away before making sure it wouldn’t fall. The balance was off and it fell back to the floor. Ryun appeared beside her in seconds and picked it up. He may not have ever been able to make the pendant work but it used to flash red when he would touch it. The pendant had not responded to his touch in over a year. He sighed and looked at Faith, who still looked like she was about to cry. Looping his fingers under the chain he placed it over her head and around her neck.
"Take care of it," he said softly.
Faith smiled a sad smile before skipping out of the room. Vaughn watched for a moment before following.
Ryun watched them go. He and Vaughn had been high class demons but even Vaughn didn't know half the things he thought he knew. Ryun stood and walked to his closet to put his cape away. The dark mark hidden on his cheek flared briefly. Far below in the depths of Hell Lucifer smirked.
"Chaos is not the only one who does not know things my dear Ryun."
