Drabble: One Step Closer

Fandom: Tin Man
Pairing: Cain/Glitch
Prompt: #19 of fandom bingo

Cain winced as he stood straight from bending over to light the last candle. All around him candles flickered, casting the room in a soft and warm glow. The scene was reminiscent of his first proposal, many years earlier. Music played softly from some invention Glitch had made after having his brain restored. He hadn’t seen the point of it at the time but Glitch had been fascinated by DG’s descriptions and he had to admit… the invention had come in handy.

A series of rattling coughs drew his attention to the door. Jeb poked his head in, “Everything ready dad?”

Cain gave a nod. “Ready.”

The door eased open to reveal an aged Glitch standing between Jeb and DG. His once brown curls had gone white years ago, his pale skin was near translucent now, age spots decorated his once clear skin and sickness had left the once strong body weak. Cain’s heart thudded painfully as Glitch gave another series of deep, rattling coughs, his hands tight on Jeb and DG’s.

Cain moved over stiffly and pulled a chair out. “Have a seat sweetheart.”

“What’s all this?” Glitch asked in a raspy voice. Though his eyes had dimmed with age, they were still bright with curiosity. Jeb and DG left quietly, they had assured Cain they would be in the next room should he need them earlier.

If Cain had had a choice he would have kneeled and taken Glitch’s hands in his own but a gunshot to the hip some years earlier had left his leg stiff and caused him to walk with a limp. As it was he pulled a chair over and sat down in front of Glitch. “Sweetheart, do you remember when I asked you to marry me?”

A smile spread across Glitch’s chapped lips. “That’s one thing I won’t forget.”

“Think about it and look around.”

Glitch stared at him for a moment before he looked slowly around the room. Cain watched as the memory became clearer in his lover’s mind, the wistful smile was a dead giveaway. Glitch eventually sighed and relaxed before he looked back at Cain. “All that’s missing is the dancing.”

“Think you’re up to it?” Cain asked with a grin.

Glitch’s eyes widened. “But your leg…”

“I admit it won’t be as fluid as it once was…” Cain slowly got to his feet and held out his hand. “Sure would be bad to waste such a proposal.”

Glitch took his hand and got to his feet, clinging to Cain as he caught his breath. “And what…proposal is that?”

Cain started a slow dance, holding Glitch close. He pressed a kiss to his lips before resting his chin against Glitch’s head as it rested on his shoulder. “One step closer to forever,” he whispered finally.

A/N: I wanted to take a slightly different take on the first thought that came to mind when I read the prompt. Hope you enjoyed it!

Oh, very nice! You took my expectations and turned them right around.

Ah, so nice to see you still writing Tin Man, I assume you still right Lord of the Rings as well? Not sure how often I'll get to read, but I did love this!

Yeah... I pretty much never get out a fandom. I may not write as much for it but I'm still in it. I have plans to rewrite a LOTR story... just need to print it off and go through the editing stages.
