As he leaned in close I could feel his breath, warm on my ear. His lips barely touched my skin and that little action sent a shiver down my spine. I was dying to hear what he would say.
“I’m gonna kill you.”
…and that was definitely not what I was expecting to hear. “What?” I asked, thinking that maybe I had heard him wrong. I could feel him smile against my ear and again I shivered, though this time it wasn’t from the same feeling I had been having a few moments before.
“I said, I’m gonna kill you.” His voice was slightly louder this time so I knew I heard him correctly this time.
I took a step back from the railing that we had been leaning against to look at him with wide eyes. Surely he was kidding right? But his face told me that he was completely serious, right down to the self-satisfied smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. Still, I didn’t want to believe him.
“I think you’re joking with me, playing the ultimate kind of prank,” I said, though my voice shook more than I liked. His confidence had really unnerved me.
“I never joke about killing someone.”
I swallowed hard. “H-How will you do it?”
He raised his hand, thumb and forefinger extended in the shape of a gun. He pointed at me and I knew his aim pointed directly at my heart. “Bang.”
I took another step back, my heart stopping at that word even though he wasn’t holding a real gun. He must have seen the fear on my face because he threw his head back and started laughing. Normally this would have been the end of the joke, the joker laughing…but I knew by the tone of his laughter that he was serious. I could feel a cold sweat break out on my skin. His laughter stopped after a moment and he fixed me with that steel gaze again. He raised his hand to his heart, making a crossing motion over it.
“Cross my heart, I hope you die,” he murmured.
