Prompt: One of those that started out as a drabble and ended up a one-shot. The prompt I started with was "Phone call".
“Jacob, phone,” Billy called from the kitchen.
Jacob raised an eyebrow and got up off the couch. Who would know he was here? The guys all called the cell phone he had gotten now. “Who is it?”
“A guy, his voice sounds a bit familiar but I can’t place it,” Billy answered.
Jacob picked up the phone, playing with the cord as he leaned against the doorframe. “Yo.”
“You still live with your dad?”
Jacob frowned, his eyebrows furrowing. “Sorry?”
“I didn’t expect you to still be living with Billy after five years…”
“Well actually I was just visiting. Who is this?”
There was a soft chuckle on the other end of the line. “Figures you wouldn’t remember.”
“Listen, if this is some sort of joke it’s not funny,” Jacob stated.
“No joke.”
“Then what do you want? Who is this?” Jacob questioned.
“…I thought of you as a big brother… you were my idol…”
Jacob racked his brain to figure this out. Who had thought of him as a… wait a minute… Jacob’s eyes widened and he nearly dropped the phone. “Seth?”
Billy stilled and looked at Jacob. Seth Clearwater had been on patrol five years ago. He hadn’t checked in that morning so Jacob phased to find him. Jacob hadn’t been able to feel him through the pack mind. He had followed Seth’s scent trail to the river and then he had lost it. In five years Seth hadn’t been seen or heard from, none of the pack had ever felt him through their connection.
“You always were smart Jake.”
“Where are you?”
“A pay phone booth.”
“What city Seth? And why are you calling?” The line went quiet for so long that Jacob almost thought Seth had hung up. But there was no dial tone. “Seth?”
“I’m in Seattle… Jake…” Seth’s voice shook slightly, he almost sounded like he was crying. “I-I’ve fallen on hard times… I need help. I know it’s been five years and I just disa-fucking-ppeared suddenly but I don’t have anyone else.”
Jacob sighed. “Seth, you know you are always welcome here. You will always be a part of this family. Your mom and sister have been so worried about you.”
“I know, I saw the missing posters… but I just couldn’t come back…”
“What happened Seth?” The line was quiet again. “C’mon buddy, you know you can tell me anything.”
“I can’t… at least not here. If… if I come back, can I stay with you?” Seth’s voice sounded so broken, Jacob’s heart ached for him.
“Of course. I want you to come home. I’ll help you get back on your feet.”
“Yeah?”
“It’s a promise. Just come home.”
“Okay, I’ll come. Where’s your place now if you’re not staying with Billy? It’ll be late when I get there, probably midnight… if not later.”
“That’s fine, I’ll be up. I actually live in Forks, 157 Wood Ave,” Jacob told him.
“That’s actually good… I was scared to come onto the rez.”
“Why?”
“Not here. I have to go.”
“Seth,” Jacob said not wanting him to go.
“I have to go,” Seth repeated. “I’ll see you later.”
“Promise,” Jacob stated.
“I promise. Bye Jake… and thanks.”
“Bye,” Jacob whispered. He waited until he heard the dial tone before he hung up.
“That was Seth?” Billy questioned.
“Yeah,” Jacob answered running a hand through his hair. “It really was. He’s going to come stay with me for awhile.”
“You should call Sue.”
“No, not yet. I want to figure out what happened in the first place. I’ll give him a couple of days, try to talk to him.”
Billy didn’t look happy but nodded. “When will he be here?”
“Late,” Jacob answered.
“Well…supper is ready. Let’s eat.” Jacob nodded and got the plates from the cabinets.
---
Jacob was watching TV, it was almost 1am, when headlights shown through the living room window. Jacob glanced out the window and saw a car, a 1991 GM Prism, sitting in the driveway. After a moment the lights were killed and the car turned off. Jacob watched as the driver door opened and Seth, a five year older Seth, step out. Getting to his feet he went to the front door to greet the b…man, for Seth was a man now, he hadn’t seen in five years.
Jacob smiled as he stepped off the porch. “Seth!” He enveloped the other in a hug. Seth returned the hug just as tightly.
“It’s so good to see you Jake,” Seth whispered.
“You too man… gosh, look at you. I mean, you still look the same… but not.” Seth looked twenty-one, his hair still cut shaggily, but his eyes looked tired and he was thin. “Are you hungry? I can whip something up real quick.”
“I’m actually really tired…” Seth answered.
“Oh well that’s cool too. C’mon in, I’ll show you which room you can use while you’re here.” Jacob turned to go back into the house but was stopped by Seth’s voice.
“Um… Jake?”
“Yeah buddy?”
“There’s something you should know about.”
Jacob turned and gave him a questioning look. “What’s that?”
Seth went to the back door of his car that was closest to them. Opening it he leaned in for a moment and then pulled out… a sleeping child in his arms. Jacob’s eyes widened as he took in the kid. Black hair, paler than Seth, probably…five years old.
“Seth?”
The child stirred at the sound of his voice. He, or she, Jacob couldn’t tell which it was just yet, yawned and blinked bright golden eyes. Those gold eyes locked on him and Jacob felt his hackles rise. Seth’s hold tightened on the child at the look he saw on Jacob’s face.
“Jake… please… this is my son, Luka…”
Jacob forced himself to calm down. He took a deep breath and relaxed. “Come inside Seth, do you have bags?”
“In the trunk.”
“I’ll get them and then… we need to talk. I know you’re tired but I have some questions that can’t wait.”
Seth nodded, swallowing hard. “Who’s that papa?” Luka asked his eyes staying on Jacob.
“He’s a friend, he’s going to help us,” Seth answered. “I hope.”
