Oh my! I have been soooooooo busy! I had two essay's due last week, one in art and one in english. I haven't gotten my art one back yet but I did get my english one. A B-! Woot! And to quote my professor, "No accompanying stoy but otherwise an outstanding first." -squee-
Now I have another english essay due on Wed. on Edgar Allen Poe. Fun times! I love Poe!
Ok... so what is happening otherwise? Hmm... I have a cold but it's not that bad. I just gave myself a headache from blowing my nose so much. I came home this weekend for my dad's b-day. He hit the big 5-0!
My mom is scheduled for surgery on March 3rd, and I am torn. My spring break happens just a weekend or two after. According to mom's doctor it's just an overnight thing. She won't be able to talk for awhile, she can't drive for a month but can ride after a few days. It'll be two-four months before she can go back to work. At my college there are no excused absences but if I talk to the Student services head she can get me "excused". Mom told me she doesn't want me to skip class... so what do I do? I would feel awful if I didn't come home and something happening to her even though we don't get along that well. But if I came home I probably wouldn't get anything in the ways of school work done.
All my friend's are pissed at my mom. They were just starting to like her and then she went and said, "I think you should consider having the lap-band surgery." Now for those of you who don't know the lap-band is like a rubber band they put around your stomach to keep you from eating so much. Mom said it's not because I'm fat but because I am borderline diabetic. I told her I would look into it and think about it.
Okay... I think that is all. Tomorrow we're having my dad's b-day party and then it's back to Cumberland for me! And in case you want to read it here's my english essay, "Numb Image".
Numb Image
“Numb Image” is a title that leads us, the readers, to question things such as ‘how can an image be numb?’ and ‘what causes the image to be numb?’ It is simply once the reader understands the image that the author speaks of is not of a picture or reflection in a mirror. The “Numb Image” is in fact our world and how we look at it.
These are a few examples of what people perceive to make them better than others, looking good, having money and/or having fame. From the time that we are young children we all dream of someday being a movie star, standing in the spotlight, with all attention on us. Of course the real reason we all want to be movie stars is because of Hollywood. We see the stars on TV living in huge houses, driving awesome cars, and being pampered while making lots of money. These stars are beautiful people that we long to look like. They are our role models. Some people strive to live this way even if they do not have the means to do it.
In our world today we are told what beauty is. We are told that beauty means everything. The people of our society are constantly trying to find ways to improve their beauty, whether it be as drastic as surgery or the use of facial creams. The key to being beautiful when wearing make-up, is to look like you are not wearing any at all. How is this possible when you are wearing ten pounds of glop on your face? This is image.
Beauty in the past was much simpler. In the days of the Greeks it was beautiful to be a little heavy or even fat. The bigger you were, the more beautiful and healthy you were considered to be. Today beautiful is when you cover your flaws with make-up and are morbidly skinny. It is quite a change from the thoughts of the past. You are beautiful if others pine after you or strive to look like you. Once a star in Hollywood reaches this point, they can do just about whatever they wish. If people disagree with what they are doing it does not really matter because they are stars and we are not. A star can throw a fit when their latté is not correct, it will be fixed, they will be apologized to, and they will receive a new one. If this happened to your common Joe he would most likely have to deal with it, or be forced to pay for a new one. This is the image, but how is it numb?
The word ‘numb’ is defined simply as unfeeling. Some believe our society today is numb to what’s going on around us. Argued causes of this numbness are TV, music, and video games. It is believed that because of the violence featured on all of these that our emotions are curved towards not feeling great distress or sadness when something major happens, such as a war breaks out. We watch the images and listen to the stories that the news gives us and those that are in movies with rapt interest. By the time the things featured actually hit home we merely give it a glance and say “that’s too bad“. But we do nothing to prevent it from happening again! These are the things that make us numb.
Being blind to others is another numbness our society has trouble with. It seems much like the same numbness and pride that Narcissus had towards others when they
were not as beautiful as he. Beauty is not the only thing that we consider when pointing our numbness out. There is also money, how you live, what your job is, even what country you live in. These are the things we think about when we look down on someone. People say that they want to help others, but when the time comes they will pass up that opportunity for something they want instead. These false promises make us numb.
To Narcissus beauty and pride meant everything, if you did not have them then you were not worth his time. We wish for beauty and change but in the end will we try to hard? Will we fade away as he did? In the end will we pine away for what we call beauty as Narcissus did, or will we continue to stare at a numb image?
And the story I refer to is...
Ovid, from his Metamorphoses, (3.341–510) is probably the best known teller of the myth of Narcissus. According to Ovid, Narcissus was the son of the Boeotian river Cephissus and the nymph Liriope (otherwise unknown). Narcissus, who had "just reached his sixteenth year" (had reached the age of fifteen), spurned the love of both male youths and girls. A nymph, Echo, loved him, but she could never get his attention. He was riveted to the water's edge, entranced by the beautiful boy he thought he glimpsed within, and she eventually pined away longing for him... until nothing was left of Echo but her sad, pleading voice. Narcissus thought the image in the water was real and pined away with desire, eventually transforming into the flower that bears his name.

Date: 2006-02-17 02:58 am (UTC)**hugs** hon. I have missed you as well. Your mom suggested surgery! Yikes. But she may just be worried about you, but I can see why some might be angry about that.
Very good essay, and very insightful. I think people put way to much on outward beauty. It fades people you better be more than just a pretty face. But that's my opinion. :)
