Clary had her knees pulled up, a sketchpad resting against her legs. She didn’t want to sketch but she needed something to take her mind off the fact that Jace was lying on the bed, thick bandages crossing over his chest. Her eyes flickered over to Alec, who had slumped against the bed, his arm resting next to Jace’s.

It was funny… all the times she had traced Jace’s marks… she had never noticed this one on his right arm until now. Well, actually she had never realized it was half of a whole. But now as she stared at Jace’s arm with Alec’s resting next to it she could see that and she wondered why they matched up so well.

“C’mon Alec.”

“It’s late Jace… mom will be mad if she catches us out of bed this late,” Alec whispered glancing over his shoulder. Though he was worried about his mother catching them up this late he was more thrilled by the fact that Jace was holding onto his hand.

“Which only makes it more fun Alec. Don’t worry, she’s not going to catch us,” Jace assured him. Jace led Alec to the solarium where they lay on the floor under the large dome window. It had been glamoured to show the night sky, clear of clouds and smog, millions of stars twinkling above them.

They lay on the floor, their heads next to each other as they stared up at the sky. “I feel like we’re the only two people in the entire world,” Alec murmured.

“We kinda are.”

Alec glanced over at Jace, licking his lips. There was so much he wanted to say, to confess, but the words died on the tip of his tongue. Instead his eyes went back up to the stars. They were silent for a long time just watching the stars.

“You know you’re my best friend Alec.”

Jace’s words made Alec jump. He had almost been asleep. “You’re my best friend too Jace.”

Sitting up, Jace stared down at him with those intense golden eyes. “We should do something to show it.”

“What do you mean?” Alec questioned also sitting up.

Jace pulled out his stele. The blade lit up the room with pale blue light. “We’ll mark each other. Then we’ll be true parabatai.”

“…warriors that fight together?” Alec asked with wide eyes.

“Someday we’ll fight together,” Jace stated. “And we’ll be closer than brothers. Will you let me mark you Alec?”

“It’ll be my first mark…”

“Which makes it that much more special right?”

Alec nodded. “Where?”

“Our arms. Two halves of a whole. And no one will know unless they are put together.”

Taking a deep breath Alec held his arm out. “Parabatai,” he said.

Jace grinned and drew the first half of the mark on Alec’s arm. Giving the stele to Alec, the other boy drew the other half. They clasped hands when it was finished. “Now, tell me a secret, something no one else knows.”
