To His Grave
Chapter 1
Four years ago Ryan Combs, Eli’s father, had found a ’69 Camaro for sale in St. Louis. The car needed some work, in fact it hadn’t run in years, but at 2,000 dollars it was to good a deal to pass up. Ryan bought the car and fixed it up with Eli on the weekends and school breaks they spent together. Now Eli drove that Camaro, Sydney was his baby.
Eli pulled up outside Tommy’s house putting Sydney into park once she had stopped. With a sigh Eli let his hands drop from the steering wheel then he looked over at Tommy. The street lamp on both sides of the car cast a soft glow over them. Eli could barely see the symbol on the front of Tommy’s shirt. The chain attached to the wallet in Tommy’s back right pocket glinted in the light. Tommy’s brown hair almost looked black, aside from the brown on the side closest to the light.
“Nothing is gonna be weird between us because of how far that went is it?” Eli questioned. Tommy’s lips quirked in a bit of a smirk at the question, it referred to the make out session that had occurred towards the end of some porno with Bikini in the title.
“If anything changes it’s because you’re too distracted to listen to me,” Tommy said.
“Huh?” Eli questioned.
“I tried talking to you three times on the way back but got no reply out of you,” Tommy answered. Eli’s brown eyes widened.
“You did?” Tommy nodded. “Gods I’m so sorry Toms!”
“You’re forgiven; it’s not like anything I was saying was that important. You know, just watch out for that car passing on the other side, random animal, aliens…” He gave Eli a grin, his blue eyes shining with amusement, and Eli laughed.
“Aliens huh?”
“Yeah, little green guys with red eyes wanting to experiment on our perfect young bodies.”
“Maybe your perfect young body, they wouldn’t want mine.” Tommy shook his head.
“This weekend is forgotten. It’s not like anything will come of a few kisses and touches. The porno started it anyway, got us all excited. Hell Eli, we’ve both gone further with girls!” Tommy laughed and Eli joined in.
“Just like you to always speak the truth,” Eli chuckled.
“Damn straight. I’ll see ya tomorrow Eli.” Tommy reached into the backseat and grabbed his backpack. The backpack hit Eli in the back of the head as Tommy pulled it over the seat Tommy didn’t apologize as he got out of the car, not that Eli had expected him to. Eli watched as Tommy walked up to his house as he rubbed his blonde hair back into its original messy state. Tommy paused at the front door to look back at Eli. He waved with a smile and Eli returned the gestures. Once Tommy was inside Eli put Sydney into gear and drove the length of road that took him two houses down to his own house.
Eli parked Sydney beside his mother’s 2001 Toyota Rav-4. Retrieving his bag from the backseat he locked up Sydney, trailing a hand on her hood as he went inside. From the pace of the clicking of the keys on the keyboard Eli could tell his mom was deep into her latest novel. Becky Combs had published fifteen books, six of which had become best sellers, she had yet to get a number one but Eli knew she was going to make it one day.
“Mom, I’m home,” Eli said from the doorway. Becky looked up from the computer screen and gave him a smile.
“Welcome home sweetheart, did you have a safe drive back?” She questioned.
“Smooth sailing all the way.” He wasn’t going to tell her how distracted he had been. “How’s the book coming?” Eli asked setting his bag down in favor of coming to peer over her shoulder.
“I have up to chapter ten, I’m thinking there will be between fifteen and twenty chapters,” she replied.
“Any titles in mind yet?”
“A few have come to mind, but none that seem to fit just right.”
“Well you’ll find it. You always have a way of finding the best titles,” Eli assured her.
“Thanks sweetheart. There’s some pizza in the fridge from lunch today if you’re hungry,” Becky told him.
“Great I’m starved, I’m gonna grab a shower and then go to bed.”
“School in the morning,” Becky reminded him. Eli rolled his eyes.
“I know. I won’t be up past one, promise,” he replied heading for the kitchen. Eli heard his mom start typing again as he heated two slices of the leftover pizza up. He grabbed his bag on the way upstairs ands bid his mom goodnight.
Once upstairs Eli dropped his bag at the foot of his bed and sat down at his desk which held his laptop and school stuff. He had never been as good a student as Tommy but he usually got his work done. The flashlight standing on the edge of his desk made him glance over the two rooftops separating his and Tommy’s houses. He was glad that those two houses were only single stories so he could see right over to Tommy’s room. As far back as he could remember he and Tommy had used their flashlights to do Morse code to talk at night. It had taken them years to learn Morse code. Now they could easily IM each other, and they did, but that would throw years of memorization down the drain. Plus, this was more fun and secretive.
Eli ate his pizza as he checked his email, most of it was spam but when he sat the subject line Ebay Item Bid Confirmation – You Won his excitement rose. Two weeks ago he had placed a bid on a rare book about one of his favorite musicians and now it was his. Eli had just sent the supplier his money through Paypal when he notice Tommy’s light had come on. After waiting a few minutes he picked up his flashlight doing a succession of quick flashed at Tommy’s window. When Tommy came to the window he had changed into a pair of shorts and a baggy t-shirt. He returned Eli’s greeting and Eli watched as Tommy wrote down the letters to the code as he told him about the books.
“Y-O-U-H-A-V-E-T-O-L-E-T-M-E-R-E-A-D-I-T” Eli whispered watching the flashes before he smiled.
“O-F-C-O-U-R-S-E”
“A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G-E-L-S-E”
“D-I-D-N-T-T-E-L-L-Y-O-U-G-O-O-D-N-I-G-H-T” Eli saw Tommy smile with a shake of his head.
“G-O-O-D-N-I-G-H-T-E-L-I”
“G-O-O-D-N-I-G-H-T” Eli turned off his flashlight returning it to its place on the corner of his desk. He shut his laptop down before heading to his bathroom for a shower. The hot warm running over his skin relaxed his muscles that were stiff. Coming out of the bathroom after finishing he changed into a clean pair of boxers to sleep in. Turning off the light Eli fell onto his bed bringing the blanket up around himself. His own bed felt good against his body. The two hour drive between his mom’s and dad’s houses always made his muscles ache. Now as he was lying here though he could forget that and think of other things.
Tomorrow would start another week of school; friends, basketball and mind numbing assignments. At least he had Tommy; his best friend always had a quiet way of making everything okay. Eli smiled as he drifted off to sleep; yes, he would always have Tommy.

To His Grave (Chapter 1)
Date: 2008-06-19 09:33 pm (UTC)I finally had some time!! Sorry it took me so long!
This was so much fun to read, really, and just what I needed right now! The two boys are definitely absorbing. It's interesting that it's through their relationship, through their dynamic, that I feel I know them at all, rather than as their own selves. This is a valuable point to make because I already know that Eli's going to have to be on his own eventually.
Is the next chapter coming soon?

Date: 2008-06-20 01:30 am (UTC)I'm glad you feel that you know them. That really excites me cause it tells me I'm growing as a writer.
I've been really busy lately and haven't had much time to concentrate on it. Prolly another week or so. I'm going to Florida week after next so I'll have plentiful time to write.
