Summer Reading and Book Reviews
Sep. 8th, 2008 09:41 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I promised book reviews of the books I had read over the summer. I think this about covers them all… but I may need to edit it a bit. I need to look at my list where I marked them all as I read them. These do not go in any order and some are from before school ended last year.
Title: Promise of the Wolves
Summary:
WHAT IS
THE PROMISE OF THE WOLF?
NEVER CONSORT WITH HUMANS.
NEVER KILL A
HUMAN UNPROVOKED.
NEVER ALLOW A MIXED-BLOOD WOLF TO LIVE.
At least that's what the wolves of the Wide Valley believe. Until a young wolf dares to break the rules -- and forever alters the relationship between wolves and the humans who share their world.
This is the story of such a wolf. Born of a forbidden mixed-blood litter and an outcast after her mother is banished, Kaala is determined to earn a place in the Swift River pack. But her world is turned upside down when she saves a human girl from drowning. Risking expulsion from their pack and exile from the Wide Valley, Kaala and her young packmates begin to hunt with the humans and thus discover the long-hidden bond between the two clans. But when war between wolves and humans threatens, Kaala learns the lies behind the wolf 's promise. Lies that force her to choose between safety for herself and her friends and the survival of her pack -- and perhaps of all wolf- and humankind.
Set 14,000 years ago, Promise of the Wolves takes us to a land where time is counted in phases of the moon, distance is measured in wolflengths, and direction by the scent of the nearest trail. Years of research into the world of wolves combines with mythical tale-telling to present a fantastical adventure set in a world filled with lore.
Review:
I love wolves, I have always felt a connection to the animal and find them beautiful so I always read and watch whatever I can find that catches my attention. This caught and held my attention.
From the moment she is introduced to the rest of her pack Kaala must fight for every inch of respect she thinks she deserves. She is either a blessing or a curse to the wolves the their valley, not even the Greatwolves know.
I want this to be continued so badly. I want to know what happens to Kaala and the other wolves, if the humans become what they did in the past and try to taken everything again, perhaps find out what happened to Borlla.
Title: Thirteen Reasons Why
Summary:
Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker–his classmate and crush–who committed suicide two weeks earlier.
On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list.
Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect teen readers.
Review:
In the beginning I was unsure if this book would be worth my while... then the moment Hannah spoke her first words I was hooked. I listened to this book on audio CD and the only thing that could have made it better was if I had listened to it on cassette tape.
Over the course of the CD's I listened to Hannah's story unfold, I felt the desperation she was feeling as she recalled each event. I felt the sadness that Clay felt. I wanted to become Hannah's friend and stop her from doing what she did.
To me this was an excellent book and I'd recommend it to anyone who can stand to read a book about suicide.
Title: Boy Toy
Summary:
Josh Mendel has a secret. Unfortunately, everyone knows what it is.
Five years ago, Josh's life changed. Drastically. And everyone in his school, his town—seems like the world—thinks they understand. But they don't—they can't. And now, about to graduate from high school, Josh is still trying to sort through the pieces. First there's Rachel, the girl he thought he'd lost years ago. She's back, and she's determined to be part of his life, whether he wants her there or not. Then there are college decisions to make, and the toughest baseball game of his life coming up, and a coach who won't stop pushing Josh all the way to the brink. And then there's Eve. Her return brings with it all the memories of Josh's past. It's time for Josh to face the truth about what happened.
If only he knew what the truth was . . .
Review:
I had just finished reading "Fanboy & Gothgirl" by Lyga so I had thought that this would be somewhat similar, I have never been more wrong. "Boy Toy" delves deep into a tortured boy's mind. In the beginning I had an idea of what had happened to Josh but that did not stop my eyes from widening or me from gasping in shock when it was actually stated.
Title: The Perfect Boy (Part of "The Gay Youth Chronicles")
Summary:
A Goth, a ghost, and a boy too perfect to be true turn the tables on the bullies of Blackford High School, but what happens when they go too far?
Review:
I think this may be my favorite out of this series. I felt a connection with two of the characters in this book more so than I have felt in the others. This story went deep and at times became very creepy but that made it all the better.
Title: The Realm of Possibility
Summary:
Here’s what I know about the realm of possibility—
it is always expanding, it is never what you think
it is. Everything around us was once deemed
impossible. From the airplane overhead to
the phones in our pockets to the choir girl
putting her arm around the metalhead.
As hard as it is for us to see sometimes, we all exist
within the realm of possibility. Most of the limits
are of our own world’s devising. And yet,
every day we each do so many things
that were once impossible to us.
Enter The Realm of Possibility and meet a boy whose girlfriend is in love with Holden Caulfield; a girl who loves the boy who wears all black; a boy with the perfect body; and a girl who writes love songs for a girl she can’t have.
Review:
This... was not what I expected. It was different and I liked that but I found it hard to keep up with who's voice I was reading.
Title: The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod: Eighth Grade Bites
Summary:
Junior high really sucks for thirteen-year-old Vladimir Tod. Bullies harass him, the principal is dogging him, and the girl he likes prefers his best friend. Oh, and Vlad has a secret: his mother was human, but his father was a vampire. With no idea of the extent of his powers, Vlad struggles daily with his blood cravings and his enlarged fangs. When a substitute teacher begins to question him a little too closely, Vlad worries that his cover is about to be blown. But then he faces a much bigger problem: he's being hunted by a vampire killer.
Review:
This was a great book for a beginning series. The emotional trauma Vlad went through as a child is compelling. How he must hide that he drinks blood is interesting and entertaining. And the twist towards the end... will hold you until the very last second.
Title: The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod: Ninth Grade Slays
Summary:
High school totally bites when you're half human, half vampire.
Freshman year sucks for Vlad Tod. Bullies still harass him. The photographer from the school newspaper is tailing him. And failing his studies could be deadly. A trip to Siberia gives study abroad a whole new meaning as Vlad connects with other vampires and advances his mind-control abilities, but will he return home with the skills to recognize a vampire slayer when he sees one? In this thrilling sequel to Eighth Grade Bites, Vlad must confront the secrets of the past and battle forces that once again threaten his life.
Review:
A perfect continuation to the first book. Brewer builds on Vlad's story from the first book, making sure he didn't forget the things he learned but adding new levels beyond what he learned as he learns more about his powers as a vampire from an OLD family friend. Vlad makes friends and loses them but not without having some fun and almost losing his life in the process.
Title: Blood Price
Summary:
It began with blood and death amid the streets of late-night Toronto. Vicki Nelson, formerly of Toronto's homicide detail, now a private investigator, witnessed the first attack by the force of dark magic that would soon wreak its reign of terror on the unsuspecting city. And as death followed unspeakable death, Vicki became more and more deeply enmeshed in an investigation which would see her renewing her stormy relationship with her former police partner, Mike Celluci, even as she teamed up with writer Henry Fitzroy, in a desperate attempt to track down the source of the seemingly unstoppable attacks. For Fitzroy, the illegitimate son of Henry VIII, had knowledge of realms beyond the mortal acquired over the centuries during which he'd mastered his own insatiable needs - the life-from-death cravings of a vampire.
Henry Fitzroy had long since learned to survive without killing, learned the skills needed to blend in with the human race. But unless he, Vicki, and Mike could find the key to conquering the magic-raised menace stalking the streets of Toronto, Fitzroy's true identity might soon be exposed and his life might prove forfeit to the uncontrollable fears of humankind. And without Henry Fitzroy, mere mortals like Vicki and Mike would not long survive against the ancient force of chaos that had been loosed on their world.
Review:
I'm hooked, completely and totally hooked. Some might hurt me for this but I dare say that Tanya Huff writes her vampires just a tad better than Anne Rice. This book was an amazing beginning to an amazing series.
Title: Blood Trail
Summary:
The unique investigative duo from Blood Price--P.I. Vicki Nelson and 450-year-old vampire Henry Fitzroy--once again join forces to solve a crime of supernatural proportions in modern-day Canada. As silver bullets take their toll, Vicki and Henry fear they won't be able to stop a crazed killer.
Review:
This second book was probably my fave out of them all. There were just so many characters to get involved with and care about. To me there seemed to be more mystery in this one and I loved that.
Title: Blood Lines
Summary:
Sealed away through unending centuries in a sarcophagus never meant to be opened, he had patiently waited for the opportunity to live again, for the chance to feed on the unwary and grow strong. Now, at last, the waiting had come to an end. Brought to the Egyptology Department of Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum, the seals and spells that imprisoned him shipped away by his discoverers, he reached forth to claim the minds and souls of the unsuspecting city dwellers, to begin building an empire for himself and his god. And only three people had even the hint that anything was wrong.
For Henry Fitzroy, 450-year-old vampire, it began with a haunting, inescapable image of the sun, a terrifying symbol of death to one such as he. Fearing for his sanity, he called upon his sometime-lover and comrade in supernatural investigations, ex-cop Vicki Nelson, for help. And even as the two struggled to cope with Henry's obsession, Vicki's closest friend and former partner, Police Detective Mike Celluci was following up on two mysterious deaths at the museum, certain he was looking at murders, not accidents -- and equally convinced that the killer was a mummy brought back from the dead!
Review:
This third book was so creepy. I know the mummy wanted to live again for his master but it stills creeps me out who he did it. And the fact that Tony witnessed it! I'm glad Henry was able to overcome... gosh how should I put it... himself?
Title: Blood Pact
Summary:
It began with the call no daughter ever wants to get, the call that told private investigator Vicki Nelson her mother had died. Mrs. Nelson's coworker at the Queen's University Life Science Department told Vicki that the cause of death was a heart attack, and that they'd be waiting for her to arrive in Kingston to make the funeral arrangements. But what started as an all too normal personal tragedy soon became the most terrifying case of Vicki's career. For when Marjory Nelson's body mysteriously disappeared from the funeral home, Vicki, her sometime lover and fellow investigator, vampire Henry Fitzroy, and her former homicide squad partner, Detective-Sergeant Mike Celluci, realized that there was something unnatural about her mother's demise. Vicki swore she'd find the culprit, and see that her mother was properly laid to rest. But what she hadn't counted on was that someone at Queen's University seemed determined to keep Mrs. Nelson on the job -- alive or dead!
Review:
Yeah okay... if the last one was creepy I don't know what to call this one. It was written amazingly and kept me on the edge of my seat but I was also completely weirded out. Not my fave of the series.
Title: Blood Debt
Summary:
Henry Fitzroy, vampire, writer, and bastard son of Henry VIII, had survived for centuries by obeying the vampire's code. He did not slaughter needlessly, did not draw attention to himself, and never invaded another vampire's territory. But now Henry was about to do the unthinkable. He was going to break the code.
It began when Henry woke to the twilight -- and the discovery that a ghost had invaded his inner sanctum. This was the start of a dangerous nightly game. Henry was allowed to ask one question of his mysterious visitor. If the answer was no, someone -- innocent and unsuspecting -- would die. It soon became clear that what this wraith -- and the others who eventually joined it -- wanted was revenge on those responsible for killing them.
Henry could not find the source of these murders on his own, nor could he ignore his unwanted guests. He had only one choice -- to call private investigator Vicki Nelson and ask for help. Henry only hoped that he and Vicki would both survive the experience...
Review:
If Blood Trail is my fave then Blood Debt is my second fave of this series. All the ghosts that appeared to Henry were such a mystery and I do love a good mystery.
Title: Disastrous Dates and Dream Boys
Summary:
Disastrous Dates & Dream Boys is the story of teenaged boys who want what we all want, to love and be loved. The boys from A Better Place are back. Shawn yearns for a boyfriend, but fears his father's wrath if he discovers the truth. Dane, too, is seeking a soul mate and trying to leave his checkered past behind. He yearns for Billy, but if he approaches him will the result be happiness or disaster? Brendan has created a new life for himself and his boyfriend, Casper, but what happened in his old hometown haunts him and he realizes he must face his father if he is to ever be at peace. Nathan also has issues to resolve with the parents who gave him and his little brother up far too easily. Disastrous Dates & Dream Boys is a tale of fathers & sons, lovers & friends, and above all love and understanding.
Review:
All the boys from "The Summer of my Discontent" are back and looking for love... in all the wrong places. Poor guys are stuck in a town that has so many gay boys but all the gay boys are to afraid to be open about it due to what happened to Mark and Taylor. It's a heart wrenching tale as all of the books in this series are but as always things that are meant to happen do.
Like I said, there will be edits later...
