There is truly one day a year that I really and truly honestly look forward to, that day is the first Saturday in May. Why? The first Saturday in May is always Kentucky Derby day.
Some people may not like horse racing but I love it, it's the most exciting 2 minutes in sports! And today was no different.
At first I was worried that I was going to miss the Running for the Roses cause dad asked me to go to the nearest town with fast food and get supper while he finished mowing the yard. The nearest town with fast food is 15 minutes there and 15 minutes back. The Derby is supposed to start at 6pm. I left the house at 5:30pm. I sped the whole way there, got the food and sped the whole way back making it home by 5:57pm. Silly me, I forget that they have to walk the horses to the paddock, then "Rider's Up!" and then they have to walk to the gates and give the history of all the horses running. I totally had an extra 20 minutes.
Normally my mom and I go to a friend of her's Derby party but this year mom is on her way back from Florida today so I was by myself at home. I was screaming and cheering to make it seem like I was there. :D
I didn't have a favorite for this year although I liked the names, "Hot Shot", "Pioneerof the Nile" and "Mind that Bird", "Dunkirk" was cool too since they always tell you to bet on the gray horse if there is one.
The gates opened and out the horses came, I was sitting on the edge of my seat. My eyes widened when I saw it happening... it couldn't be... but it was... oh my God!
"Mind that Bird" came from ten horses back between the final turn and the finish line, squeezed through an impossibly tight space next to the railing and then pulled ahead by 6 3/4 lengths! "Mind that Bird" was a 50-1 shot and he WON the 135th Kentucky Derby!
I don't think anybody could believe it.
The favorite came in next to last.
