“Hi, I’m Quil Ateara.”
Embry glanced over at his best friend. Quil was smiling that smile as he greeted the kids they had just met. Looking away he swallowed his jealousy, he hated when Quil gave that smile to anyone else.
“Why do you do that?” Embry asked picking at what was supposed to be eggs on his breakfast try.
Quil turned and looked at Embry. “Do what?” He hadn’t realized he had been doing anything other than saying ‘hi’.
“Greet people with that inflection in your voice.”
“Inflection? What inflection?”
“The Hi, I’m Quil Ateara,” Embry replied imitating his best friend. Quil stared at Embry and then started to laugh. Embry looked confused. “What are you laughing at?”
“You’re jealous!”
“Jealous? Jealous of what?!”
“I don’t know,” Quil chuckled. “Maybe because I never greeted you like that.”
Embry blinked. Had he not? Quil greeted everyone like that… he thought back. No, Quil was right, his first day at school Quil had crashed into him as he caught a football. Quil had apologized and started to say it but someone else had called his name and they had just gone from there. Jealous… maybe he was jealous.
Quil watched Embry’s face as he thought. “How about now?”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
Quil held out his hand. “Hi, I’m Quil Ateara.”
Embry felt a certain thrill go through him at those words. He stared at Quil’s hand before taking in his own with a smile. He had never known how much those four words could affect him. On impulse Embry leaned in and caught Quil’s lips with his own. Quil’s eyes widened comically.
“Hi, I’m Embry Call,” Embry purred. Quil grinned, he had never seen this result coming from his greeting… but it wasn’t complaining.
